Record prices achieved at South West Water Auction in Devon and Cornwall

- Mon 20 Apr 2015

Following a comprehensive marketing strategy on behalf of South West Water, a 100% auction success rate was achieved at what was a packed auction room at South West Water’s Lakeside Centre at Roadford Lake.

Following daily analysis and hourly traffic to our website, we were able to predict an exceptional pre-auction demand for the lots on offer and a large attendance at the venue on the day. Chris Baxter from the Corporate department explains:

“Website traffic spiked to an all-time high the day the electronic auction catalogue was made available and in the lead up to the auction, legal pack downloads, from the same website, identified the interest in each lot thus enabling us to market more heavily those lots with less interest. With a peak in website traffic to the dedicated website the day before the auction this was good omen for record attendance”.

As part of the our marketing package, selected lots had spectacular drone footage which enhanced viewing downloads, enabling people to view remote lots in full 360º from the comfort of their own home.

Of particular interest were the 10+ water storage tanks on offer, especially those located in the South Hams. In the past few years some tanks have gained permission to convert into residential dwellings, and in particular lots 3 and 38, located close to Cornworthy, and the Dunstone Water Storage Tank with views to the coast drew fevered bidding. Dunstone WST attained a record price of £93,000 and as Chris Baxter explains, this is a per-acre value of £304,000!

At the other end of the scale large areas of open access land on Dartmoor sold at below £200 per acre, with the cheapest lot at Beacon Hill near Bodmin selling at just £2,000. With prices as wide ranging as these there was something for everyone at the auction.

We continue to run traditional public auctions as well as our very successful On Line auction service and are pleased to report an increase in business so far this year and therefore plan to extend our auction activities from Somerset, Devon and Cornwall into Dorset and Wiltshire in 2015 / 2016.
