As the UK transitions toward low-carbon and energy-efficient heating solutions, air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are becoming increasingly prominent. Despite their growing popularity, there remains a great deal of confusion and misinformation. To help you make an informed decision, we’ve addressed ten of the most common myths surrounding air source heat pumps.
1. “Heat Pumps Don’t Work in Cold UK Winters”
This is a common misconception. Modern ASHPs are designed to operate efficiently even in sub-zero temperatures - as low as -15°C or colder. In fact, countries with much harsher climates, such as Sweden and Norway, have been using them successfully for many years.
2. “They’re Only Suitable for New Builds”
Not true. While new homes may be designed with heat pumps in mind, they can also be installed in older properties. With appropriate insulation and system design, ASHPs can be integrated effectively into a wide range of homes across the UK.
3. “You Need Underfloor Heating for a Heat Pump to Work”
Underfloor heating works well with heat pumps, but it is not a necessity. Standard radiators can also be used, although they may need to be larger to suit the lower flow temperatures associated with heat pumps.
4. “Heat Pumps Are Noisy”
In reality, most air source heat pumps produce a noise level comparable to a modern refrigerator or dishwasher - typically around 40 to 60 decibels. With correct installation and placement, noise is unlikely to be an issue.
5. “They’re Too Expensive to Install”
While installation costs can be higher than those for conventional gas boilers, support is available. The government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants of up to £7,500 to help offset the cost. Over time, lower running costs and improved energy efficiency can make ASHPs a cost-effective choice.
6. “Heat Pumps Take Too Long to Warm a Home”
ASHPs operate differently from traditional boilers. Rather than providing rapid heat on demand, they maintain a consistent and comfortable indoor temperature throughout the day. With proper insulation and scheduling, this results in a warm and energy-efficient living space.
7. “You Can’t Use a Heat Pump with a Hot Water Cylinder”
On the contrary, most air source heat pump systems are designed to work with a hot water cylinder. Unlike combi boilers, heat pumps heat water gradually and store it for use as needed, making this a standard and effective setup.
8. “They’re Not Environmentally Friendly Because They Use Electricity”
Although they rely on electricity, air source heat pumps are significantly more efficient than traditional electric heating - often producing three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. As the UK’s electricity grid becomes increasingly powered by renewable energy, the environmental benefits of ASHPs continue to grow.
9. “You’ll Be Cold in the Winter”
A properly designed and installed system will comfortably heat your home year-round. Working with qualified, experienced professionals - such as those certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) - is crucial to achieving the right outcome for your property.
10. “You Won’t See a Return on Investment”
Long-term financial and environmental returns are increasingly compelling. As gas prices fluctuate and electricity becomes cleaner, heat pumps offer stable running costs, reduced carbon emissions, and potential increases in property value due to improved energy efficiency.
Air source heat pumps represent a reliable, future-proof heating solution for a wide range of UK homes. While they may not be the right choice in every situation, many of the common concerns are based on outdated or incorrect information. With the right guidance and installation, ASHPs offer a cleaner, smarter way to heat your home.
