September has arrived, and while we might not be quite ready to say goodbye to summer, there’s something rather lovely about making our homes feel a little cosier as the evenings draw in.
The good news? You don’t need to completely redecorate your home for autumn. A few simple swaps can make all the difference, helping you create that warm, welcoming feel without going overboard on pumpkins and leaves!
Pack away your breezy summer throws and bring out chunkier knits, soft fleece or brushed cotton. Drape one over the sofa or the end of the bed for an instant autumnal feel.
One of the easiest swaps of all. Replace bright summer colours and linen textures with warmer tones such as rust, olive, mustard, chocolate brown or deep burgundy. It’s an inexpensive way to make a room feel completely different.
As the evenings get darker, candles become an autumn essential. Try scents such as amber, sandalwood, cinnamon, vanilla or spiced apple to give your home that cosy September feeling.
Introduce warmer bedding for those cooler nights. A heavier duvet, quilted bedspread or cosy throw can make the bedroom feel instantly more inviting — especially when the British weather inevitably decides to turn chilly overnight!
Autumn is all about layering. Think woven baskets, wool, boucle, velvet, chunky knits and natural wood. Adding different textures helps create a cosy look without needing to add lots of colour.
Summer flowers can be replaced with dried grasses, eucalyptus, branches or autumnal foliage. A simple vase of seasonal stems can make a beautiful statement on a dining table, console or coffee table.
Swap bright summer tableware for earthy tones, natural linen napkins and wooden or ceramic accessories. Even a simple Sunday roast feels that little bit more autumnal with a thoughtfully dressed table.
First impressions count! Add a new doormat, a basket for blankets or wellies, and perhaps a simple autumn wreath. It’s a small change that can make your home feel welcoming before you’ve even stepped through the door.
With the evenings drawing in, lighting becomes even more important. Switch on table lamps, floor lamps and warm-toned bulbs rather than relying solely on the main ceiling light. The result is instantly more relaxed and cosy.
September doesn’t mean abandoning the garden just yet. Add outdoor cushions, blankets and lanterns so you can still enjoy the space on those crisp autumn evenings — ideally with a cup of tea in hand!
The best autumn interiors don’t have to be themed. Start with a few small changes — warmer colours, softer textures, seasonal scents and cosier lighting — and let the season gradually make its way into your home.
After all, September is the perfect in-between month: summer may be winding down, but there’s still plenty of time to enjoy your home, garden and those last few lighter evenings.
