Recent research from the HomeOwners Alliance has revealed a problem that we at Bradleys Estate Agents hear about often: many older homeowners who want to downsize are having to abandon their moving plans because there simply aren’t enough bungalows available.

Here are some of the key findings:

Among homeowners aged 55 and over, 38% said that their next move would ideally be to a bungalow.
However, bungalow construction has plunged. In 1990, 11% of new homes were bungalows. By 2024, that had dropped to just 1%.
Many older people report that a lack of single storey homes (especially in the bungalow category), combined with the stress, upheaval, and cost of moving, are preventing them from doing what they would prefer – leaving homes that aren't ideal any more.
