History
Treverry Manor occupies a fascinating position within the ancient landscape of Mawgan-in-Meneage, an area steeped in Cornish history, faith and tradition. The parish of Mawgan has origins dating back many centuries, with the settlement recorded in the Domesday survey of 1086 and a long association with early Christian heritage. The surrounding countryside, close to the Helford River and Gweek, has historically been shaped by farming estates, woodland, waterways and important local families.
Local history records describe Treverry as having connections with an earlier religious foundation, traditionally believed to have been used as a retreat by monks. Such secluded sites were often chosen for contemplation and prayer, taking advantage of Cornwall’s peaceful valleys, woodland and proximity to natural waterways. The sense of tranquillity that remains today reflects the character of this historic landscape, where ancient routes, settlements and religious influences have shaped the area over generations.
Treverry’s most notable historical association is with the celebrated naval commander Sir Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth (1757–1833). A member of a prominent Cornish family, Pellew enjoyed an extraordinary career in the Royal Navy, rising through courage, determination and exceptional leadership during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1796, following his heroic rescue of survivors from the wrecked East Indiaman Dutton at Plymouth, he was created a Baronet and became Sir Edward Pellew of Treverry, Cornwall.
Sir Edward Pellew went on to become one of Britain’s most respected naval officers, later receiving the title Viscount Exmouth. Rumour has it that Russel Crowe's character Jack Aubrey in 'Master and Commander - Far Side of the World was partially based on Sir Edward. His achievements included distinguished service at sea, command of the Mediterranean Fleet, and recognition for both his bravery and humanity.
Today, Treverry Manor combines the atmosphere of a historic Cornish country residence with the privacy and beauty of its rural setting. Surrounded by countryside near the Helford River, the property remains connected to a remarkable heritage of faith, maritime achievement and generations of Cornish life.
