10 Essential Tips to Prepare Your Garden for the Colder Months

- Wed 08 Oct 2025

As the temperatures drop and the nights draw in, now is the perfect time to get your garden ready for winter. A little preparation in autumn can protect your plants, tools, and outdoor spaces from frost and harsh weather - and ensure your garden bounces back beautifully in spring. Here are ten essential ways to prepare your garden for the colder months.

1. Clear Fallen Leaves and Debris

Regularly rake up fallen leaves and decaying plant matter to prevent rot and pests from taking hold. Compost healthy leaves to create nutrient-rich mulch for next year.

2. Protect Tender Plants

Move delicate potted plants into a greenhouse, conservatory, or sheltered spot. For plants that must stay outside, wrap them in horticultural fleece or bubble wrap to shield them from frost.

3. Prune Dead or Damaged Growth

Cut back dead stems and branches on shrubs and perennials to reduce disease risk and encourage strong growth in spring. Avoid heavy pruning on frost-sensitive plants.

4. Feed and Mulch Your Soil

Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as compost or bark, around the base of plants. This helps insulate roots, suppress weeds, and improve soil health over winter.

5. Tidy the Lawn

Give your lawn one last mow before winter, keeping the grass slightly longer to protect it from frost. Clear any debris and aerate compacted areas to improve drainage.

6. Clean and Store Garden Tools

Wash, dry, and oil your garden tools to prevent rust. Store them in a dry shed or garage, and drain hoses and watering cans to stop them freezing and splitting.

7. Harvest What’s Left

Pick the last of your vegetables, herbs, and fruit before frost hits. Some root vegetables can be left in the ground a little longer if covered with mulch.

8. Look After Wildlife

Leave some areas slightly untidy - piles of leaves or logs make great winter shelters for hedgehogs and insects. Clean bird feeders and keep them stocked through the colder months.

9. Check Fences, Sheds, and Greenhouses

Inspect structures for any damage and make repairs before winter storms arrive. Secure loose panels, oil hinges, and ensure greenhouses are watertight.

10. Plan for Spring

Use quiet winter evenings to plan next year’s planting scheme. Order seeds early, and take stock of what worked well this year - and what you might change.
