7 Tips to Keep Your Garden Green This Summer

- Tue 17 Jun 2025

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy your outdoor space – but rising temperatures and dry spells can make it tricky to keep your garden looking lush and healthy. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, here are some simple yet effective tips to help your garden stay green and vibrant all summer long.

1. Water Wisely

Timing is everything. Water early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is lower – this reduces evaporation and helps plants absorb moisture more effectively. Use a watering can or soaker hose to target the base of the plant, rather than the leaves, to get water where it’s needed most.

2. Mulch to Lock in Moisture

Mulching is one of the easiest ways to protect your soil from the heat. A layer of bark, compost, or even grass clippings can help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep roots cool. It also improves soil structure over time – a win-win!

3. Choose Drought-Tolerant Plants

If you’re refreshing your garden, consider low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plants like lavender, rosemary, or ornamental grasses. These can handle dry conditions better and still provide colour and texture to your outdoor space.

4. Feed Your Lawn and Plants

Summer can be tough on plants and lawns, so give them a helping hand with a slow-release fertiliser. This provides essential nutrients to support healthy growth throughout the warmer months. Be sure to follow instructions and avoid overfeeding, especially during very hot spells.

5. Keep On Top of Weeds

Weeds compete for water and nutrients, so regular weeding is essential. Tackle them before they spread – ideally after rain or watering, when the soil is soft and roots are easier to remove.

6. Use Shade Strategically

Move potted plants into shaded spots during extreme heat, or use shade cloths or garden umbrellas to protect more sensitive areas. Even temporary shade can make a big difference in preventing sun scorch.

7. Don’t Over-Mow the Lawn

Keep your grass slightly longer in summer – around 5–8cm – to help retain moisture and reduce stress. Mowing too short weakens the lawn and leaves it vulnerable to drying out.
