The Do’s and Don’ts of Maintaining a Real Christmas Tree

- Wed 03 Dec 2025

There’s nothing quite like the scent and sparkle of a real Christmas tree to welcome the festive season into your home. But while these trees add warmth and wonder, they also require a little care to stay fresh and safe throughout December. Whether you've become a first-time homeowner or tenant enjoying your first Christmas in a new home, or a long-time resident preparing for another season of traditions, here are our essential dos and don’ts for keeping your real tree looking its best.

The Dos

• Do choose a fresh tree

When selecting your tree, look for vibrant green needles that feel flexible rather than brittle. Give it a gentle shake - minimal needle fall means the tree is fresh. A fresher tree will not only look fuller but will last much longer.

• Do make a fresh cut at the base

Before placing the tree in its stand, trim about 2–3 cm off the bottom of the trunk. This opens up the pores and helps the tree absorb water more efficiently.

• Do keep your tree hydrated

A real tree can drink up to a litre of water on the first day alone. Check the water level daily and ensure it never drops below the base of the trunk. Consistent hydration helps prevent needle drop and keeps the branches supple.

• Do place your tree away from heat sources

Radiators, fireplaces, and direct sunlight can dry out your tree quickly. Choose a cool, shaded spot in your living room to maintain freshness and reduce fire risk.

• Do use LED lights

LED lights are cooler and more energy-efficient than traditional bulbs, reducing the chance of drying out the tree and lowering electricity costs.

The Don’ts

• Don’t place your tree near open flames

Candles and real Christmas trees should never be close together. Even a well-hydrated tree is flammable, so keep candles well away from branches and decorations.

• Don’t overload the branches

Real trees vary in strength depending on their species and density. Avoid hanging overly heavy ornaments on delicate branches to prevent drooping or breakage.

• Don’t forget to recycle

When the festivities are over, make use of your council’s recycling scheme or a local collection service. Many areas turn real trees into wood chippings for community spaces - an eco-friendly finale to your holiday season.

• Don’t leave lights on unattended

Always switch Christmas lights off before leaving the house or going to bed. It’s a simple safety precaution that keeps your home protected.
