As winter continues and more bad weather ahead, January and February can be harsh on your home. Cold weather, damp conditions, and strong winds mean your property needs extra care to stay warm, safe, and efficient. Use this checklist of practical home maintenance tips to prepare for the tail end of winter and beyond.
1. Keep Your Heating System in Check
With chilly days lingering, your heating system remains vital.
Bleed Radiators: If your radiators feel warm at the bottom but cold at the top, they likely need bleeding to improve efficiency.
Check Boiler Pressure: Ensure your boiler is maintaining the correct pressure (usually 1-2 bar). Too low or too high could indicate an issue.
Service Your Boiler: If you didn’t get a service in autumn, book one now to avoid unexpected breakdowns in the remaining cold months.
2. Clear Gutters and Drains
Winter rain can clog gutters with leaves and debris, leading to overflowing water and potential damage.
Inspect Gutters: Check for blockages or sagging sections. Use a ladder and gloves to safely remove debris or hire a professional.
Unblock Drains: Pour boiling water and a mix of bicarbonate of soda and vinegar down outdoor drains to clear minor blockages.
3. Protect Against Damp and Condensation
Cold weather can cause condensation to build up, leading to damp and mould.
Ventilate Rooms: Open windows for a short time daily, especially in kitchens and bathrooms where moisture builds up.
Wipe Down Windows: Use a microfibre cloth to remove condensation from windows each morning.
Check for Mould: Treat any signs of mould immediately with a specialist cleaner to prevent it from spreading.
4. Insulate and Draught-Proof Your Home
Keep your home warm and energy-efficient by sealing any gaps that let cold air in.
Check Windows and Doors: Apply draught excluders or reseal window frames if you notice any cold spots.
Insulate Pipes: Prevent frozen or burst pipes by insulating any exposed ones in your loft, garage, or outdoor spaces.
5. Start Planning for Spring Home Improvements
Use the quieter winter months to plan any larger home projects for spring. Whether it’s repainting a room, upgrading your garden, or tackling renovations, now is the perfect time to budget, gather supplies, and book tradespeople ahead of the busy season.
Taking action in any of these areas now, could save your home in the months ahead, not to mention a leak, minor damage or worse still the loss of heating!
