What are House Hunters looking for in the South West?

- Wed 24 Nov 2021

The crisis of Covid-19 has reassessed the importance of what people want most out of their homes. For many people, the commute to their office is now only across the hall from their bedroom which isn’t the case for all but for those that are still working from home it looks as though it is set to stay and new studies show that this is now influencing house hunters priorities.

In the South West, broadband connectivity is ranked the top most important consideration for people buying a home, this coming before the size of the property and the number of bedrooms. This may well be because of the influx of home movers we saw moving to the countryside, from the cities that are now able to work from home, meaning broadband speed and connectivity is their number one priority.

A good broadband connection could add more than £5,000 to the price of your house according to 37% of property sales professionals questioned, while 9% said the figure would be over £10,000. With more people working from home and relying on streaming services, the crucial importance of connectivity for homebuyers is clearly demonstrated by the survey commissioned by global tech leaders, Huawei.

Although, for homebuyers in the South West broadband connectivity is ranked top priority, for the rest of the UK, 23% of people rank the size of the property higher than broadband with 18% of people thinking the number of bedrooms is the 3rd most important below broadband connectivity, 10% believe the age of the property is very important followed by 9% of people that hold nearby public transport in high regard.

Darren Ellis, Group Sales Director commented “It is always surprising when anything other than the size of a property or the number of bedrooms isn’t one of the highest priorities for house-hunters! As we have all seen the impact of Covid-19 has been extreme to us all in many different ways so therefore broadband being house-hunters highest priority in the West Country isn’t as surprising as we once would have thought. This has become even more apparent after the lockdowns we have all been through where the place you live has become more important than ever.”
